S-Cubed successfully implemented an automated curbside collection program for the Town of Langdon in Rocky View County. The program combined garbage and recycling services which added convenience and increased homeowner recycling participation rates. All residents received a 120 liter garbage cart and used this for three months to determine if they needed more garbage capacity before subscribing to a 240 liter cart. The user pay program encouraged residents to recycle more and, more importantly, allowed them to self-evaluate their waste generation behaviors and how much they were willing to pay for increased garbage capacity.
Disposing garbage at the landfill just got more expensive for a small Town with the need to comply with landfill legislation
The Hamlet’s diversion strategy included launching an automated curbside collection program for garbage and recycling. A curbside recycling program added convenience and increased homeowner recycling participation. This was one method to reduce paper and cardboard from entering the landfill as these material were being banned.
All residents received a small 120 litre garbage cart for three months and users could subscribe to a big 240 litre cart at a higher rate if more capacity was needed. A user pay model allows residents to decide how much garbage they want to pay for. The program encourages residents to recycle more but more importantly, allows them to self-evaluate what their waste generation behaviors are and where they want to save money.
